Burn Permits & Trash Pick-Up

The City of Vinton will temporarily suspend issuing burn permits. However, you can still burn materials if you follow all the rules. Failure to do so may result in a call-out by the Vinton Fire Department and possible fines.

Garbage pick-up by Waste Management will continue at the regular time.

For reference, Section 10-3 of the Vinton, LA Code of Ordinances allows for the opening burning of certain materials under the following guidelines:

  • Allowed are leaves, limbs under six inches in diameter, and other plant material.
  • Fire confined in an area not larger than ten (10) feet in diameter with a height of not more than four (4) feet.
  • Limited to daylight hours.
  • Recreational fires limited to an area three (3) feet in diameter and two (2) feet in height.
  • Burning area should be fifty (50) feet or more from any structure or combustible material.
  • The burning of rubbish, plastics, rubber, or similar products is prohibited.
  • Monitor the fire in progress and have on hand a fire extinguisher or other approved on-site fire extinguishing equipment such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose, or water truck. All fires should be extinguished by sunset.

Water Boil Advisory

The City of Vinton is currently under a boil advisory due to a loss in water pressure from a malfunctioning pump. Please boil for one minute any water from the tap used for drinking or cooking. The tap water is safe for bathing and laundry, but not consumption. The boil advisory will last until further notice.

Town of Vinton Seeking Applications

The Town of Vinton Department of Public Works is now seeking applications for a full time lineman in the Electrical Department. Experience preferred. Applications may be picked up at City Hall on Monday through Thursday (7:30 am to 5:00 pm) and on Friday (8:00 am to noon).

North Horridge Street Bridge Closure

Beginning January 6, 2020, the North Horridge Street bridge just south of Ted Lyons Ballpark will be closed for replacement, road, and sidewalk repairs. The bridge will remain closed until repairs are completed.

Please pay attention to signage that will direct travel down an alternative route via Big Woods Road to reach Parish Road. The directions are as follows:

  • Going north, turn left onto Short Street.
  • Then right onto Big Woods Road.
  • Right onto Bellow Road.
  • Right onto Crane Road.
  • Right onto Parish Road. From there, all streets are accessible.

VHS Band Christmas Serenade

This morning the VHS Marching Band made a stop by City Hall to perform Christmas carols to the delight of City of Vinton staff.

In Memoriam Jason T. McGee

Vinton Police Officer Jason McGee passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019, following a long fight against cancer. The funeral will be at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Lake Charles at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

New Recreation Center Groundbreaking

The Ward 7 Recreation Center broke ground on Friday, November 1, on the new 32,060 sq ft community center at 1615 Horridge St. Pat Williams Construction will build the new center at a contract price of $4,190,000.00 with a completion date of the summer of 2021. The building will feature one full and one half basketball court, with the ability to accommodate a full volleyball court, two activity rooms, an exercise room, a walking track, a kitchen, concession area, and business/office space.

On hand for the groundbreaking were the Ward 7 Recreation Center board members, direct, Mayor Stinson, and others. Refreshments were served afterwards in the old Recreation Center gym.

2019 Homecoming Parade Lineup Information

We are not assigning spots this year.  Participants will line up on a first come, first serve basis except for current class floats and homecoming court members.  Numbers will be assigned before the parade starts.

Line up will begin at 3:00 pm at the intersection of Horridge St and Grace Ave then continue west on Grace then north on Stevenson and west on Perry if needed.  The parade itself will start at 4:00 pm.

All entries (except current class and court floats) need to come down Perry St from West St and then go South on Stevenson to line up.

Street closures by 3:00 pm!!!  Horridge St will be closed to all traffic at the recreation center. Perry St will also be closed to all traffic between Stevenson St and Horridge St.  Grace Ave will be closed at the high school.

Current class floats and homecoming court ONLY report to the front of the high school to line up. Someone from the fire department will be there to line them up by class prior to the parade start.

LMA District “G” Meeting

This year Vinton hosted the Louisiana Municipal Association’s District “G” meeting at the Vinton Knights of Columbus Hall. The highlight of the evening were the nomination of candidates for the upcoming officer elections. Mayor Kenneth Stinson was nominated for reelection as LMA Vice President.
